A stadium crowd sings like whales and a city at night sounds like a rainforest. CHORUS, a free immersive installation about how close we are to nature, runs at d3 from 3 to 8 November.
This November, See Play Dream presents CHORUS at Dubai Design Week: an immersive installation about the bond between people and the natural world.
In CHORUS, the sights and sounds of people and nature swap places. A city at night plays to the sounds of a rainforest. A stadium crowd chants to whale song. Emojis chirp like birds at dawn, and coral reefs fill with human chatter in many languages.
At first it feels wrong. Then, slowly, it starts to feel right. Every living thing calls out for the same reasons: to belong, to be found, to say "I'm here."
"We often think of nature as somewhere we visit," says Bahram Pourghadiri, who wrote CHORUS. "CHORUS suggests it's much closer. We're part of the same chorus, just singing in different voices."
CHORUS is staged in the Show Pod, a three-walled immersive room with 4K laser projection and a soundscape that responds to visitors. The centre wall always plays, while the side walls wake up as people move. The more people inside, the more of the story appears and the fuller the sound becomes. In the finale, every image and every sound comes together as one chorus.
"We wanted a piece that needs its audience," says Neda Sehat, director of CHORUS. "Every visitor becomes another voice in the chorus."
There are no headsets and no apps. Just walk in.
When CHORUS closes, the Show Pod comes down, goes back into storage and is used again for the next story. The walls are lit by projection rather than printed graphics, so nothing about the show needs to be thrown away.

Admission: free, no booking needed, suitable for all ages
Duration: seven minutes, playing on a continuous loop
Accessibility: step-free access throughout and wheelchair accessible. CHORUS contains some flashing lights that may affect visitors with photosensitive epilepsy.
